Podcast Review: The Jocko Podcast

This is a word of warning — your comfort bubble may soon be under threat. This is a review of a relatively new podcast that focuses on leadership and self-ownership that truly has the potential to change your life. Don’t believe me? Ask around. In the short time that Jocko’s podcast has been live—this podcast series has accumulated an extraordinary fan base that has welcomed such a ferocious, non-bullshit approach to taking ownership of one’s life.

Simply due to the nature of the podcast, it wasn’t long after it went live that it appeared on my radar. Good friends of mine who had their ears closer to the ground than I, picked up on it and before I knew it, I was advised relentlessly to check it out.

Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu black belt

Jocko Willink is a passionate BJJ practitioner who received his black belt from mixed martial artist Dean Lister. Jocko regularly discusses the intricacies of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on his podcast – ranging from fighting strategy, fitness, MMA analysis and more.

20 years in the U.S. Navy SEAL teams

Jocko has essentially spent his entire working life within the Teams. A man who has had to embrace violence to be truly effective within his role. Through the chaos, war and leadership challenges Willink has faced within the military, he has formulated a refreshing approach to personal development through an intense, thunderous delivery that is evident with each episode of the podcast. Check out an example below:

Getting Started

But before you get stuck into the Jocko Podcast – I strongly suggest you initially listen to his appearance(s) on the Joe Rogan, Tim Ferris or Sam Harris Podcast (I’ll link the episodes below) Why bother with these first you ask? These recommendations are an excellent way to learn about the man behind the podcast before you subscribe and get into this powerful podcast of his. The different personas of the aforementioned guys do an excellent job at extracting the core offerings of Willink in an interview format, ultimately allowing the listener to understand the man behind the microphone before they open up to his wisdom.
