Fun Outdoor Projects for Dad and Kids

Kids in this generation are too inclined to depend on high technology such as playing video games and surfing the internet. In fact, some of them don’t experience playing outside that much. Yes, the internet can provide answers and explanations on a variety of topics, but nothing beats physical activities when learning things.

If you’re thinking about having some father and kids bonding, you might want to take your children out on the weekends and work on fun projects where you can bond and learn together. Here are some of the best dad and kids’ outdoor projects you and your children could try.

Make Bouncing Bubbles

Blowing bubbles is one of the fun activities that children love but isn’t it more fun if you can make bubbles bounce? This is an easy project that you and your kids will enjoy.

The ingredients you need for the bouncing bubbles are:

  • 1 cup of distilled water
  • A half cup of dish detergent
  • A pair of winter gloves
  • Bubble wand

How to make it:

Mix dish detergent with water and let it stay for a few hours. The longer you wait, the stronger the bubbles will be. After a few hours, the solution is ready to be blown.

Let your kids wear the gloves, then blow bubbles onto them. They will be able to bounce the bubbles on their gloves.

Create an Exploding Chalk

If your kids love rockets, they’ll surely like this colorful one. This project is somewhat messy, but it doesn’t matter because it’s for fun.

Here are the materials needed:

  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Food color
  • Film canisters
  • Alka-Seltzer

How to create it:

First, mix cornstarch and water in a container. Once they are well mixed, you can pour it into the film canisters. Then, add a few drops of food coloring to the canisters and mix them well. After these, your rocket is ready to go.

Break the Alka-Seltzer into four then toss it to the canister and then quickly cover it with its lid and stand back. After a few seconds, the rocket will fly to the air and it will leave colorful paint on the sidewalk’s pavement. Each rocket can leave different and cool art design on the pavement.

Make It Snow

If it’s a humid day, you can pretend it is winter with your kids by making snow. This is also a great project if your daughter or son haven’t experienced winter yet.

Here are the ingredients needed:

  • 1-pound baking soda
  • Shaving cream

How to make it:

You simply mix the two ingredients. Once they are well mixed, the snow will start forming immediately and you and your kids can start playing with it like it’s winter.

Build a Cardboard Maze

In this project, you can showcase your kids’ and your engineering skills. This is best if you have little kids who can crawl through tunnels made of boxes. If you have a lot of cardboard boxes at home, you can use them in building a maze. You can create a maze out of them and design the boxes any way you want.

Create a Water Wall

Another fun outdoor project to make is backyard water wall. Not only it is fun, but it’s educational, as well. It’s also very easy to create.

Here are the things needed:

  • A vertical surface that will serve as the wall
  • Variety of plastic bottles, hoses, and containers
  • Staple gun
  • Scissors or knife

How to create it:

First, cut the bottles to form a funnel-shaped container. Then, attach them to the wall using a staple gun. Make sure to guide your kids in using the materials to avoid accidents. Line them up vertically so the water can flow through them. Once you secure the bottles in place, then you’re ready to have some fun with the kids.

They will surely enjoy scooping and pouring water to different containers watching it flow from one bottle to another, all the way down the wall.

Make a Homemade Kite

During a windy day, flying a kite with the children sure is fun, but it will be cool too if you try creating one with your kids. Inner Child Fun shares a video tutorial on how to create one, and here are the things you need:

  • A sheet of paper
  • Bamboo skewer
  • Tape
  • String
  • Scissors
  • Hole Puncher

Decorations (party streamers, etc.)

Once you’ve created your kites, you and your kids will enjoy the day running around and flying them.

Make a Water Balloon Launcher

Water balloon catapults are one of the best projects you can build outdoors with your children. This is a great project, especially during the summer. Frugal Fun 4 Boys shares how they created a DIY water balloon catapult. Here are the materials needed:

  • A 1×4 board and a 2×4 board
  • Wood screws
  • Ruler
  • Saw
  • Screwdriver
  • Small plastic container
  • Duct tape

Once you finished creating one, you and your kids will have lots of fun launching water balloons or water bombs.

These are just a few suggestions out of the many projects you can do. Aside from the projects listed above, maybe you can also think of new ones which you can share with dads like you. Having time to play and create projects with your kids is something that can help you get to know them better. You can also release stress with these activities as well.
